Summary

A cancer survival model considering sociodemographic variations in 'normal' mortality is presented and compared to other models. The study examines how education and marital status affect survival from 12 common cancer types among men and women aged 40-80 in Norway from 1960-1991. Results show that a model accounting for sociodemographic variations in 'normal' mortality gives similar results to a relative-survival approach for most cancer sites, while a model disregarding these variations gives more different results. The simplest method, modeling all-cause mortality among cancer patients, performs well for aggressive cancers when data on cause of death or 'normal' mortality variations are not available.
