Summary

In 2016, households with caregivers accounted for 37.9% of nuclear families, 29.0% of single-person households, and 18.3% of other households. The proportion of single-person households and nuclear families is increasing, while the proportion of three-generation households is decreasing.

The main caregivers were mostly family members living together (58.7%), followed by care workers (13.0%). The majority of main caregivers were women (66.0%), and most were between 60-69 years old (28.5% for men, 33.1% for women).

The main reasons for requiring care were dementia (24.8%) and cerebrovascular disease (18.4%) for those requiring care, and joint disease (17.2%) and aging (16.2%) for those requiring support.

The time spent on caregiving varied by the level of care required, with "almost all day" being the most common for those requiring higher levels of care (wanting care 3 and above). Women accounted for approximately 70% of caregivers who spent almost all day caregiving, with the majority being spouses or children of the care recipients.
