Summary

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common pregnancy complication, often overlooked by medical practitioners and patients. A prospective cross-sectional study of 333 pregnant women found that 82 (24.6%) presented with CTS symptoms, mostly ethnic Malays (87.8%). The risk of developing CTS during the third trimester was two-fold among Malay women. The commonest complaint was daytime numbness (76.8%), and the severity of CTS was predominantly mild (80.5%). However, only 25.6% of symptomatic patients mentioned their problems to doctors, and 9.5% received treatment, indicating under-recognition and under-treatment of CTS in pregnancy.
