Summary

Rates of psychiatric disorder in ME/CFS are similar to rates in other chronic medical conditions. The definition of ME/CFS significantly impacts measured psychiatric comorbidity rates. Rates of personality disorder in ME/CFS are not elevated. Physiological differences exist between ME/CFS and depression, with anxiety not being compared. The genetics of depression and ME/CFS are independent. ME/CFS is genetically distinct from FM. Illness severity predicts outcome in ME/CFS, but psychological symptoms and cognitive beliefs do not. The definition of ME/CFS has a major impact on measured psychiatric comorbidity rates. Somatization is a notable example, and the CDC's empirical definition does not effectively differentiate.
