Summary

A study of 100,152 adults in England found that those living in homes with ambient air temperatures above 23°C had lower body mass index (BMI) levels than those living in colder conditions, after adjusting for age, gender, social class, health, and month/year of assessment. The association between high indoor temperatures and reduced BMI was consistent across different seasons and survey waves, and remained significant even after controlling for additional demographic, environmental, and health behavior variables. The findings suggest that elevated ambient indoor temperatures may be associated with lower BMI levels, potentially due to increased energy expenditure and decreased food intake at temperatures above the thermoneutral zone.
