Risk and Prevalence:
Anyone with memory problems and mobility can wander, with six out of ten people living with dementia exhibiting this behavior at some point. It's a concern that can arise at any stage of the disease.

Understanding Wandering:
The Alzheimer’s Society discourages the term "wandering" due to its implication of purposelessness. Instead, they suggest "walking about," as many individuals with dementia have their own reasons for their actions.

Triggers and Causes:
- Following old routines (e.g., school run, work, gardening)
- Searching for someone who has passed away or something misplaced
- Restlessness or boredom

Prevention Strategies:
- Make doors less conspicuous by painting them the same color as walls or covering with a curtain.
- Place dark rugs in front of doors to deter individuals from stepping into what they perceive as a dark hole.
- Keep coats, keys, and outdoor items out of sight.

Responding to Wandering:
- Call 999 immediately if someone with dementia is missing.
- Provide recent photos and a detailed description to the police.
- Consider places the person might return to (previous workplaces, frequent social spots).
- If familiar, reassure them upon their return and quickly re-establish a routine.
