If left undetected, seafarers may become overwhelmed and suffer from depression or psychosis. INTERTANKO's Human Element in Shipping Committee (HEiSC) has prepared guidance on managing crew welfare and mental wellness, including advice on helping seafarers deal with emotional stress and negative feelings. The guidance considers three key areas: understanding seafarers' needs, advice on addressing seafarers' needs, and a special focus on cyber wellness. Seafarers' needs include recognition, stimulation, and certainty, and if these needs are not met, it can result in emotional and psychological distress.
