Summary

In Norway, the estimated number of new viremic HCV cases among active people who inject drugs (PWID) peaked at 540 in 2020 and dropped to 260 in 2030 in the base scenario. Reinfections increased from 10 in 2016 to 80 in 2030, accounting for 31% of all infections in 2025. A 50% reduction in reinfection risk resulted in 30 new cases in 2030, with reinfections peaking at 80 in 2020 and declining to 5 in 2030, accounting for 15% of all infections. A 75% reduction led to 10 new cases in 2030, with reinfections peaking at 40 in 2021 and dropping to <5 in 2030, accounting for 8% of all infections. The study suggests that reducing reinfection risk through interventions can greatly impact treatment effectiveness.
