Despite scientific research, no test can determine with certainty that drowning or immersion was the cause of death, making it essential to determine the cause of death for bodies found in water, with four possible scenarios: died from drowning, died in the water but not drowned, ended up in water post-mortem, or placed in water post-mortem. The diagnosis of drowning can be most accurately determined through a comprehensive forensic autopsy, supported by secondary findings such as eyewitness reports or suicide notes, but this is not always the case in the Netherlands, where the criminal investigation and research into the cause of death are often closed without a forensic autopsy. This publication examines the value of external examinations of bodies found in water, focusing on the development of pulmonary foam, which occurs when water mixes with surfactant in the lungs, and its forensic value in determining the cause of death.
