Elderly patients with dysphagia, a swallowing difficulty, are at risk of malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia. Early diagnosis and swallow exercises can help improve or recover swallow function. The use of texture-modified foods can reduce aspiration risks, but patients often have limited food choices. A hospital trialled two companies providing texture-modified meals, one with a wide range of ethnic options, and found that patients and health professionals were happy with the increased food choice and improved presentation. The process was successful in broadening food options for patients with dysphagia, particularly in a multicultural area.
