Summary

Young adults reporting exclusive e-cigarette use or dual use with other tobacco products have different perceptions and cessation-related factors, with dual users indicating a greater importance of quitting all tobacco or nicotine products, and exclusive users expressing greater confidence in quitting e-cigarettes and all tobacco and nicotine products. Interviews revealed that previous failed quit attempts were attributed to inability to cope with social influences, stress, and withdrawal symptoms, and that most expressed disinterest in quitting due to beliefs of eventually outgrowing e-cigarettes or unreadiness to abstain from nicotine. The study concludes that young adult e-cigarette cessation interventions should target risk perceptions, cessation barriers, and social influences/support.
