Summary

ESBL-producing bacteria are enzymes that protect bacteria from beta-lactam antibiotics, limiting treatment options to carbapenem antibiotics. They occur in hospitalized patients and healthy individuals, and can be transferred through the fecal-oral route, catheters, and other foreign bodies. An outbreak of multiresistant ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae occurred in Danish hospitals in 2007, infecting 33 patients, mostly with urinary tract infections. Interventions, including isolation, hand hygiene, and disinfection, contained the outbreak. ESBL-producing bacteria pose a problem in nosocomial cases, causing outbreaks, longer hospital stays, and increased mortality.
