Summary

This study investigated the effects of virgin olive oil supplementation on hormonal status in half-marathon trained and untrained runners. Thirty healthy male athletes, aged 19-22, were divided into three groups: untrained runners receiving 20ml of olive oil, half-marathon runners receiving 20ml of olive oil, and half-marathon runners without supplementation. The results showed that virgin olive oil supplementation was associated with a significant increase in testosterone levels and a decrease in luteinizing hormone (LH) concentration in runners not supplemented with olive oil. Cortisol levels increased significantly in non-supplemented runners after a 10-week running training program and a half-marathon race, but decreased 24 hours after the race. The study suggests that virgin olive oil supplementation can improve hormonal status in half-marathon athletes.
