Summary

Obesity is a growing public health concern in Africa, driven by factors such as decreased physical activity, increased food supply, and socioeconomic status improvements. Traditional African culture considers being overweight as socially desirable, and this perception, combined with decreased manual labor and increased sedentary activities, has led to high rates of overweight and obesity, particularly among women of high socioeconomic status. Physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle are independent risk factors for obesity, leading to cardiovascular complications and other health problems. The prevalence of obesity in Africa is increasing, with latest WHO reports showing that overweight and obesity are becoming leading causes of death worldwide, requiring increased attention and a multidisciplinary approach to health to prevent morbidity.
