Summary

PAXIL (paroxetine hydrochloride) is an antidepressant that increased the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults. It is not approved for use in pediatric patients. PAXIL is used to treat major depressive disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the central nervous system. The drug is completely absorbed after oral dosing and has a mean elimination half-life of approximately 21 hours. Patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy should be monitored for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior.
