Il 23 maggio si celebra la Giornata internazionale per l'eliminazione dell'ostetrica fistula. La fistola ostetrica è una lesione che si verifica durante un parto difficile e prolungato senza assistenza medica adeguata, causando incontinenza urinaria e/o fecale. Si stima che almeno 2 milioni di donne in Africa, Asia e Medio Oriente siano affette da fistola, con 50.000-100.000 nuovi casi ogni anno. La costanza della fistola è un chiaro segno che i sistemi sanitari non soddisfano le esigenze delle donne. L'operazione per curare la fistola costa solo 300 dollari, ma la maggior parte delle donne non sa che la fistola può essere curata e non ha i mezzi per pagare l'operazione. L'ONU sta lavorando per aumentare la consapevolezza e diffondere la conoscenza sulla lotta contro la fistola.
