Today, we face a pandemic of diabetes, with 371 million sufferers worldwide, especially in the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle East. Professor Stephen O’Rahilly is a hero of our time, pioneering research into diabetes using modern molecular biology, and his approach has led to major medical advances. He has demonstrated the importance of courage in research and has been recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society. To stop diabetes from overwhelming world economies, we need measures to treat and prevent the disease, and Professor O’Rahilly's work on obesity, closely linked to diabetes, cancer, and other conditions, is crucial. I call upon you to confer on Professor Stephen O’Rahilly the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.
