Summary

Researchers investigated the therapeutic effects of n-3 fatty acids on psoriasis, a common inflammatory skin disorder. Studies showed that increased concentrations of free arachidonic acid and its pro-inflammatory metabolites are found in psoriatic lesions. Replacement of arachidonic acid with alternative precursor polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), may be a therapeutic option. Three studies were conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of intravenously administered fish oil-derived lipid emulsion on different forms of psoriasis. Results showed that treatment with n-3 fatty acids resulted in a higher response rate than infusion of n-6 lipids, with a rapid increase in plasma-free EPA and a more than 10-fold increase in neutrophil EPA-derived 5-lipoxygenase product formation. The study concluded that intravenous n-3 fatty acid administration reduces psoriasis, possibly related to changes in inflammatory eicosanoid generation.
