Summary

Trauma involves intense fear, horror, or helplessness, and extreme stress that overwhelms a person's capacity to cope. Trauma-informed care realizes the prevalence of trauma, recognizes its signs and symptoms, responds with knowledge, and resists re-traumatization. The 4 R's of TIC and 3 E's of trauma outcome (event, experience, effects) are key components. Effects of trauma may occur immediately or later, with 51% of the general population experiencing trauma in childhood, and 98% of people served in behavioral health having experienced trauma. Trauma can manifest as aggressive behavior, depression, mental health issues, inability to concentrate, relationship difficulties, somatic illness, and chronic illness.
