Summary

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a well-established cause of cervical cancer and other anogenital and head and neck cancers. In India, 123,907 new cervical cancer cases and 77,348 cervical cancer deaths occur annually. HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for about 70% of cervical cancer cases. The crude incidence rate of cervical cancer in India is 18.7 per 100,000 women. Other HPV-related cancers in India include anal, vulva, vaginal, and penile cancers, as well as oropharyngeal, oral cavity, and laryngeal cancers. The prevalence of HPV 16 and/or 18 among women with normal cytology, low-grade cervical lesions, high-grade cervical lesions, and cervical cancer is 5.0%, 28.2%, 62.8%, and 83.2%, respectively. Smoking, high total fertility rate, and low oral contraceptive use are contributing factors to cervical cancer in India. The country has national recommendations for cervical screening, but no HPV vaccination program.
