Summary

The national survey on blood coagulation disorders has been conducted by the AIDS Prevention Foundation since 2001 as a commissioned project by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. With the cooperation of many, the report for the fiscal year 2020 has been completed. The number of deaths from AIDS-related diseases among HIV-infected patients with blood coagulation disorders has not shown a significant increase since 1998. Deaths from liver cirrhosis and liver cancer caused by hepatitis C virus have been the main cause of death for patients with congenital blood coagulation disorders, regardless of HIV infection. However, the cumulative number of patients who have achieved SVR (sustained virological response) through treatment has increased to 810 cases (258 HIV-infected and 552 non-infected) in this report, suggesting the effectiveness of direct-acting antiviral drugs introduced in 2014. The survey also collects data on age-related diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease, as well as information on inhibitors, home therapy, and regular infusion therapy. New treatments, including extended-half-life products and subcutaneous non-coagulant factor products, have emerged, and clinical trials for new treatments are ongoing.
