Summary

Society has shifted towards digital means of communications, leaving those not comfortable with technology isolated and limiting their interactions. In the EU, 8 million individuals live with intellectual disabilities, 50% of whom have communication difficulties, and 1 in 3 note this as a barrier to healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted healthcare accessibility issues, with the swift switch to online services becoming a barrier. DigiAcademy is an accessible digital education platform co-designed with people with accessibility needs, providing bite-sized video tutorials for digital literacy training. The platform has been funded and supported by various organizations, including Enterprise Ireland and EIT Health. Health Innovation Hub Ireland (HIHI) has validated the product need and provided clinical evaluation and feedback, with clinicians praising the design and highlighting its potential benefit to services.
