Summary

A community-based vision-screening program for 3.5-year-old children in Japan consists of three steps: primary screening with questionnaires and home visual acuity testing, secondary screening with visual acuity testing by nurses and pediatricians' inspection, and tertiary screening with examinations by ophthalmologists. This study introduced photorefraction with a Spot vision screener in addition to visual acuity testing to determine if it could better detect eye diseases. The results showed that photorefraction detected additional eye diseases, and the rate of children with treatment-requiring diseases was highest in cases where children failed both the Spot vision screener and visual acuity testing standards. The study concluded that photorefraction, in addition to visual acuity testing, led to the detection of more eye diseases at 3.5 years, and visual acuity testing at home should not be omitted.
