Eating disorders claim lines increased 65% nationally from 2018 to 2022, with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) rising 305%, binge-eating disorder 81%, anorexia nervosa 73%, and bulimia nervosa 3%. Binge-eating disorder was the most commonly diagnosed eating disorder without other accompanying eating disorders in 2022. The increase in eating disorder claim lines varied by US census region, with the South having the largest increase (84%) and the Northeast the smallest (51%). Eating disorder claim lines also varied by state, age, and gender, with females accounting for over 89% of claim lines. Telehealth utilization for eating disorders increased over 10,000% from 2018 to 2022, becoming the most common place of service. Patients with eating disorders were over five times as likely to have a mental health condition and over four times as likely to have a substance use disorder. Co-occurring mental health conditions were common, with 72% of patients having one or more conditions, and 41% having generalized anxiety disorder and 39% having major depressive disorder.
