Cardiovascular disease is a key contributor to excess morbidity and premature mortality in diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Lipid management offers improved outcomes for diabetic patients with concomitant renal disease. The guidelines provide practical recommendations for UK diabetologists, nephrologists, and general practitioners involved in the care of adults with diabetes and nephropathy and/or chronic kidney disease. The presence and extent of renal disease are defined by measurement of serum creatinine and urinary albumin:creatinine ratio. The guidelines are based on systematic literature searches and expert recommendations classified as 'strong' or 'weak' with evidence quality designated as high to very low. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with a 2-4 fold excess risk of cardiovascular disease, and CKD is associated with a 20% cumulative risk of CVD over 10 years, magnified with comorbid diabetes and proteinuria. The guidelines aim to offer best practice guidance for lipid management in type 1 and type 2 diabetes through the spectrum of DN-DM CKD.
