The procedure is performed by a doctor and takes about 20 minutes, with the patient lying on their side or sitting up with their knees drawn to their chest. After the test, the patient must rest for at least an hour and avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours. Risks include spinal headaches, back or leg pain, and rare complications such as accidental puncture of the spinal cord or brain herniation. Test results are available immediately from the color of the CSF, with laboratory test results taking longer.
