Summary

Melioidosis in Far North Queensland is a seasonal infection affecting patients with comorbidities, with 197 cases recorded between 1998 and 2016, mostly during the wet season. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are disproportionately affected, with a higher case-fatality rate. Pneumonia is the most common clinical finding, and disease recurrence is often due to inadequate source control or poor adherence to oral eradication therapy. The case-fatality rate has declined over time, but prompt and targeted therapy is crucial for high-risk patients.
