POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR KNEE MENISCUS REPAIR

WOUND CARE:
- Loosen bandage if swelling or numbness occurs
- Remove ACE bandage and gauze 48 hours after surgery, leave BandGrip on until day 12
- Shower 48 hours after surgery, keeping BandGrip dry
- Remove BandGrip on day 12 and cover incision with steri-strips

MEDICATIONS:
- Take prescription pain medication as needed
- Take Zofran for nausea
- Take anti-inflammatory medication with food to reduce swelling and pain
- Take 81mg aspirin twice daily for 30 days

ICE THERAPY:
- Use ice machine as directed for first 2-3 days
- Elevate extremity while icing
- Check skin frequently for excessive redness or blistering

ACTIVITY:
- Maintain heel-touch weight bearing
- Elevate operative leg to chest level
- Avoid activities that increase knee pain or swelling
- No driving until off narcotic pain medication

EXERCISE:
- Begin exercises 3x daily starting the day after surgery
- Do ankle pumps regularly to reduce blood clot risk
- Formal physical therapy will begin after first postoperative telemedicine visit

BRACE:
- Keep brace locked in full extension at all times when upright
- Remove brace for exercises and periods of rest

DIET:
- Begin with clear liquids and light foods
- Progress to normal diet if not nauseated

FOLLOW-UP CARE:
- Contact Dr. Cole's team with questions or concerns
- Initial postoperative visit will be a telemedicine PA visit 7-14 days from surgery

EMERGENCIES:
- Contact Dr. Cole's practice hotline at 312-243-4244 for unrelenting pain, fever, or continuous drainage.
