Summary

Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference, and Waist-to-Height Ratio for Predicting Metabolic Risk in Elderly Chinese Population

This study investigates the effectiveness of five obesity indices—body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHpR), and body adiposity index (BAI)—in predicting multiple metabolic risk factors in a community-based sample of 5685 elderly Chinese individuals aged 60 years and older.

Key Findings:

Prevalence of Metabolic Risk Factors: Approximately half (46.67%) of participants had high metabolic risk, characterized by the presence of ≥3 non-adipose metabolic risk factors such as elevated blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, reduced HDL-cholesterol, serum uric acid, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Predictive Ability of Obesity Indices:
BMI had the strongest predictive ability for most metabolic risk factors in both genders, except for elevated SUA in males and elevated TG in females.
WC performed best for predicting reduced HDL-C in both genders and elevated triglycerides in males.
WHtR was strongest for predicting elevated SUA in females.
Gender Differences: Significant differences were observed between men and women regarding WC, WHpR, and BAI. Females had higher WHtR and BAI compared to males, while males exhibited greater WC and WHpR.

Conclusion:

The study highlights the importance of BMI, WC, and WHtR as valuable tools for predicting multiple metabolic risk factors in elderly Chinese individuals. These findings contribute to the understanding of obesity's role in metabolic syndrome within this demographic and can inform public health strategies aimed at preventing and managing metabolic disorders among older adults.

Description

This study compared the predictive ability of five obesity indices to predict multiple metabolic risk factors in an elderly Chinese population. The indices included body mass index, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, waist-to-hip ratio, and body adiposity index. The goal was to identify the most effective obesity index for predicting metabolic risk factors.
