The new process involves individual calls to secretaries for prescription requests, booking appointments in the prescribing clinic, and completing clinical assessments. If prescribed, medications are issued electronically or via FP10. A letter is sent to the GP asking them to opt-in or out, and a shared care agreement or decision to decline prescribing is completed. The prescribing excel sheet is updated with patient details, drug requested, and date written to the GP.

The initiative has promoted collaborative work with primary care, in-house pharmacists, CILT, and CCGs. The new process has improved the patient pathway, enriched patient safety, and saved income for the Trust. The team has also generated income through CILT and CCG funding for medication refusals, with 69 agreements and 17 pending outcomes.
