Summary

Hypertension is a leading cause of premature death worldwide, and inheritance plays a role, with genetic contribution ranging from 30-50%. A study compared blood pressure response to the cold pressor test among children of hypertensive and normotensive parents. The study included 130 subjects, 65 children of hypertensive parents and 65 children of normotensive parents, aged 18-30 years. Results showed that the mean change in systolic blood pressure among children of hypertensive parents was higher (9.5 mmHg) than among children of normotensive parents (6.7 mmHg), and the mean change in diastolic blood pressure was also higher (10.4 mmHg vs 8.7 mmHg), but the difference was not statistically significant. The study suggests that children of hypertensive parents may have a higher blood pressure response to the cold pressor test, but the difference is not statistically significant.
