Summary

Junior doctors in a Nigerian tertiary hospital were found to have low awareness of prescribing errors, with 90% having less than 1 year of prescribing experience. The most common reasons for prescribing mistakes were failure to check prescriptions with a reference source and failure to check for adverse drug interactions. Factors contributing to prescribing errors included workload, multitasking, rushing, and tiredness/stress. Interns were least confident prescribing antibiotics, opioid analgesics, cytotoxics, and antipsychotics unsupervised. The study suggests that principles of rational prescribing and events that constitute prescribing errors should be taught in the practice setting to improve prescribing quality.
