Summary

New Zealand is a leader in understanding the long-term effects of psychological trauma on birthing women. Trauma from life events and traumatic birth experiences can be ameliorated with good support and trauma counseling. A dedicated group, TABS, provides essential advice, education, and de-pathologization of intense emotions. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a compensatable diagnosis in litigation, and midwives have a duty of care to clients. PTSD can occur after childbirth, especially in women with pre-existing trauma histories, such as sexual abuse. Symptoms include reliving the trauma, avoidance, and heightened irritability. Diagnosis is based on characteristic symptoms following an extreme traumatic experience.
