Kinzang Dukpa, Regional Project Coordinator at WOAH, attended a sub-regional training workshop on animal rabies diagnosis in Bengaluru, India. The workshop aimed to address the neglected and underreported disease of rabies in South Asia, where over 95% of human rabies cases are associated with dog bites and 45% of the global burden of human rabies occurs. The region faces poor rabies surveillance, insufficient diagnostic capacity, and resource constraints. To combat this, the South Asia Rabies Laboratory Network (SA-RABNET) was formed, with the vision to end human deaths from dog-mediated rabies in South Asia through collaboration in diagnostics, surveillance, research, and information sharing. The goal is to enhance animal rabies surveillance and disease reporting through improved collaboration amongst national lead rabies laboratories.
