In 2017, nearly 10,500 children under 14 in the US were expected to receive a new cancer diagnosis, with over 40,000 undergoing treatment annually. Receiving a cancer diagnosis creates uncertainty, affecting many aspects of a child's life, including increased worry, limited social interactions, and physical challenges. Children may experience anxiety, somatization, and withdrawal, while parents may struggle with distress, depression, and grief. A multicenter randomized trial examined the effects of an animal-assisted intervention on stress, anxiety, and health-related quality of life for children with cancer and their parents. The study found that children in both groups experienced reduced state anxiety, and parents in the intervention group showed decreased parenting stress, but no significant differences between groups were observed over time. The study suggests that animal-assisted interventions may provide benefits for parents and families during the initial stages of pediatric cancer treatment.
