Summary

Depression is a medical condition that responds to treatment in most cases. If your loved one has become isolated, lost pleasure in activities, expresses hopelessness, or has unexplained mood, behavior, or wellness changes, they may be experiencing depression. Talk with your loved one and support them in getting evaluated by a medical or mental health professional.

Depression's key feature is significant impairment or loss of functioning. To be diagnosed, a person must have been feeling miserable, depressed, sad, empty, or irritable for most of the day, nearly every day for 2 weeks, or lost interest in previously-enjoyed activities. They may also experience changes in sleep patterns, eating habits, energy levels, self-worth, physical health, concentration, or memory.

Depression affects a person's thinking, including reasoning, organization, attention, memory, and decision-making. It's not up to you to diagnose someone; your role is to support your loved one in recognizing the problem and getting care.

There are different types of depression, including major depressive disorder, dysthymia, perinatal or postpartum depression, treatment-resistant depression, and bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by lows (depression) and elevated mood and activity levels (mania).

Depression treatment is not the same for everyone, but studies show the most effective approach is a combination of talk therapy and medication. Talk therapy includes various types and styles of psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Anti-depressant medication can help stabilize a person, allowing them to alleviate symptoms and improve functioning. Other treatments include ketamine, brain stimulation treatments like TMS, ECT, or VNS, and intensive interventions like IOP, partial hospitalization, or inpatient care.

Caregiver stress is a real problem, and it's essential to manage your stress level. Families for Depression Awareness is a national nonprofit organization helping families recognize and cope with depression and bipolar disorder to get people well and prevent suicides. If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or text HELLO to 741-741.
