Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented mental health crisis in the US, with two-thirds of Americans fearing exposure to the virus and over 12 million unemployed. A recent survey found that more than one-third of American adults report symptoms of depressive and/or anxiety disorder, triple the rate in 2019. Over 90 million American adults may be suffering from anxiety and/or depression. The Census Household Pulse survey found that 25% of adults reported symptoms of depressive disorder and 33% reported symptoms of anxiety disorder. The suicide rate is also a concern, with more than 1 in 10 US adults having considered suicide in the past 30 days, more than double the rate in 2019. Economic stress is also a major factor, with 31% of adults having difficulty paying for household expenses and 22 million people not having enough food to eat. Young adults are particularly affected, with almost half reporting symptoms of mental illness.
