Summary

Human breast milk (HBM) was investigated for its caries-related risk. The study found that HBM did not cause a significant drop in plaque pH, supported moderate bacterial growth, deposited calcium and phosphate onto enamel powder, and had poor buffer capacity. HBM alone did not cause enamel decalcification, but when supplemented with 10% sucrose, it caused dentinal caries in 3.2 weeks. The conclusion is that human breast milk is not cariogenic.
