This thesis discusses the role of inflammation observed by imaging, particularly MRI, in the early detection and recognition of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). It used patient data from two population-based cohorts and healthy symptom-free controls to assess MRI-detected joint inflammation. The study found that certain types of low-grade inflammation were present in healthy controls, increasing with age, and that using a cut-off based on healthy volunteers improved the predictive accuracy of MRI. The thesis also examined the additive value of imaging in determining the number of involved joints for RA classification and found no convincing evidence that it was beneficial. Additionally, it evaluated the current MRI imaging protocol and found that adding MRI of the feet did not increase predictive accuracy.
