Summary

The Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 and camel pageant championships increase the risk of MERS-CoV transmission and global spread due to mass gatherings and interactions with camels, which are a major reservoir of the virus. As of November 1, 2022, 2600 people have been reported to have laboratory-confirmed MERS, including 894 deaths, globally. The simultaneous hosting of these events poses an enhanced risk of transmission, and proactive surveillance is essential to reduce the risk of MERS-CoV spreading. Visitors to Qatar are at risk of returning to their home countries infected with MERS-CoV, and public health authorities and healthcare workers should have heightened awareness of the possibility of MERS-CoV infection.
