Summary

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections cause an estimated 58,000-80,000 hospitalizations among US children under 5 and 60,000-160,000 among adults over 65 annually. US RSV epidemics typically peak in December or January, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted this pattern from 2020-2022. Analysis of PCR test results from July 2017-February 2023 showed that prepandemic seasons began in October, peaked in December, and ended in April, while the 2020-21 season was absent, the 2021-22 season began in May and peaked in July, and the 2022-23 season started in June and peaked in November. Regional patterns varied, with earlier epidemics in the Southeast and later in the North and West. Ongoing monitoring of RSV circulation can inform prevention strategies and clinical trials.
