Summary

Hypersensitive scars can become oversensitive, tender, or painful to touch after surgery or injury.
Causes of hypersensitivity include damage to nerve endings due to skin injury.
Symptoms can include pain, tingling, shooting, or burning sensations.
Desensitisation techniques can help reduce hypersensitivity and improve daily activities.

Desensitisation Techniques:

1. Massage: as described in a separate leaflet.
2. Texture Massage: rub the area with various textures, starting with soft materials and progressing to coarser ones.
3. Immersion: immerse the affected area in a bowl of materials like cotton wool, kidney beans, or rice.
4. Percussion/Tapping: lightly tap the affected area with a hand or light object.
5. Vibration: use an electric toothbrush to apply vibration to the area.

Important:

Perform techniques 3-4 times a day for approximately 10 minutes.
Look at the affected area while performing techniques.
Exercises may feel uncomfortable at first, but continued practice can reduce pain and improve sensations over time.
If concerns or avoidance of using the affected area persist, seek advice from a GP or Consultant.
