Summary

Sickle cell disease (SCD) significantly affects the quality of life (QOL) of patients, particularly in the physical and psychosocial domains. A study of 40 individuals with SCD in Alagoas, Brazil, found that most participants were adults (62.5%) with a predominance of the SS genotype (85%) and pain as the commonest complication (95%). Mood disorder was found in 40% of the adults. The patients exhibited overall impairment of QOL, which was more pronounced among adults and under 15-year-old adolescents. Married adults showed less impairment of most QOL domains compared to unmarried adults, and adults with mood disorder exhibited greater impairment of all QOL domains. The study suggests that interventions to improve vitality, pain, and mental health could contribute to maintaining high levels of QOL in patients with SCD.
