Summary

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders where red blood cells become hard and sticky, causing a shortage of red blood cells, blockages, and severe pain. SCD is inherited and affects 90,000 to 100,000 people in the US, mainly Blacks or African Americans. Common complications include pain episodes, infections, hand-foot syndrome, eye disease, acute chest syndrome, and stroke. Treatment goals are to relieve pain and prevent infections, and options include blood transfusions, high fluid intake, IV therapy, medications, and hydroxyurea. The only cure is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, which is risky and requires a close match.
