Summary

Ukraine's cancer care system was in the process of transforming from a Soviet-style model to a more modern, UK NHS-style system when Russia invaded in February 2022. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Kyiv was forced to pause most activities, discharging patients and postponing treatments. Doctors and patients took shelter in the basement during air attacks, and many medical staff stayed to continue caring for patients. The NCI eventually restarted chemotherapy treatments, and later surgical activities, with doctors working 24/7 and taking on additional roles due to staffing shortages. Despite challenges, the NCI continued to provide cancer care, with some patients preferring to stay in Kyiv for treatment rather than relocating to western Ukraine.
