Summary

This study examined the effects of heavy resistance exercise on lymphokine responses in 10 strength-trained men. The subjects performed two resistance exercise protocols, high force (HF) and high power (HP), with equal total work. Plasma lactate increased significantly after both protocols, but was higher after HF. Plasma interleukin-2 (IL-2) decreased at 15 minutes post-exercise after HF, while plasma interferon-gamma (IFN-g) decreased immediately after HP and returned to pre-exercise levels by 15 minutes. The results indicate that high force and high power workouts induce differential IFN-g and IL-2 responses, with suppression of these lymphokines being transient.
