Social contagion is a significant mechanism underlying the increase in adolescent girls declaring themselves transgender, driven by peer rejection, bullying, and marginalization, with online communities and Rainbow clubs in schools providing validation and acceptance. Transition and self-harm/suicidality are linked, with affirming clinicians potentially colluding with patients' self-hatred by "traumatizing" their bodies with cross-sex hormones and surgery.
