Summary

This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between current treatment adherence, past medication discontinuation, and self-stigma in 66 stable outpatients diagnosed with depressive disorder in remission. Participants had a mean age of 49.00 ± 12.56 years. Adherence was measured using the Drug Attitude Inventory – 10 items (DAI-10) scale, and self-stigma was assessed via the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness (ISMI) scale. The results showed that current adherence was not associated with gender, education level, employment status, family burden, or partner status. Adherence levels did not differ between patients who had arbitrarily discontinued medication in the past and those who had not. However, adherence was significantly positively correlated with patient age, age at disease onset, and the level of self-stigma. The study concludes that self-stigma and patient age are important factors influencing treatment adherence in individuals with depressive disorder in remission.
