Summary

A pleural effusion is a buildup of fluid in the pleural space, causing breathlessness. A Tunnelled Indwelling Pleural Catheter (TIPC) is a small, flexible tube inserted into the chest to drain the fluid, allowing patients to drain fluid at home without repeat hospital visits. The TIPC is inserted under local anesthesia, secured with a stitch, and has a one-way valve to prevent fluid leakage. After insertion, patients can go home, and District Nurses will visit to remove pleural fluid using specially designed bottles.
