Summary

Solid foods should be introduced to infants around 6 months old, when they are developmentally ready. Signs of readiness include sitting with or without support, controlling their head and neck, opening their mouth when food is offered, and swallowing food rather than pushing it out.

ECE providers should communicate with parents about introducing solid foods, including discussing signs of readiness, dietary needs, and food allergies. Foods and drinks appropriate for 6- to 24-month-olds include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and pasteurized yogurts and cheeses, while those to avoid or limit include foods with added sugars, fried or high-salt foods, unpasteurized foods, and caffeinated drinks.

For children with food allergies, ECE providers should create a care plan with the primary healthcare provider, post food allergy information in a visible place, and watch for signs of allergic reactions. Responsive feeding practices, such as listening to hunger and fullness cues, can help build healthy eating habits.

Mealtime tips include washing hands, seating the child while eating, making mealtime fun, and encouraging self-feeding with fingers and child-sized utensils. To prevent choking, cut up food into smaller pieces, mash foods, and avoid serving common choking hazards like popcorn, whole grapes, and cheese cubes. Always supervise children while they eat and keep mealtimes calm and not rushed.
